Is Honey Added Sugar? What "No Added Sugar" on Honey Really Means

What 'no added sugar' means on a honey label – Shuddhta Organic

Part of our guide on honey purity and brands: How to Identify Pure Honey in India →

Quick answer:

  • Does honey have added sugar? Pure honey doesn't. Nothing is mixed in. Its sweetness is natural sugar (mostly fructose and glucose) that bees make from nectar. But cheap honey can be mixed with sugar syrup, which is why "no added sugar" on a label needs proof.
  • Does honey count as added sugar in your diet? Yes, in practice. When you stir honey into tea or food, the World Health Organization counts it as a "free sugar", the same as table sugar.
  • Is honey sugar-free? No. Honey is about 80% sugar. "No added sugar" doesn't mean sugar-free or diabetic-friendly.

So "no added sugar" on a jar is a promise that no syrup was mixed in, and the proof is a lab test, ideally a batch NMR report.

Label phrase What it should mean What it does not mean
No added sugar No syrup or sugar mixed in Sugar-free, low sugar or diabetic-friendly
100% pure honey Only honey in the jar Tested, raw or traceable
Raw honey Strained, not heat-treated Free of added syrup
NMR tested A lab checked for syrup and origin Every batch was tested, unless the report matches your jar

Honey is naturally full of sugar

Bees collect nectar, add enzymes and evaporate most of the water. What is left is mainly fructose and glucose, plus a little water (usually about 17–20%) and small amounts of other natural compounds. So every real honey is high in sugar. That is not a defect, and it is not what "no added sugar" is about.

This also matters for your diet. The World Health Organization counts honey as a "free sugar", just like table sugar. "No added sugar" honey is still something to enjoy in small amounts. See honey vs jaggery vs sugar for the full comparison.

Added sugar vs natural sugar in honey

  • Natural sugar: fructose and glucose that bees make from nectar. Present in all real honey.
  • Added sugar: syrup mixed in during or after harvest. It is cheaper than honey, so it stretches the volume and lowers the cost.

Once mixed, the two look, pour and taste very similar. That is exactly why adulteration works.

Which syrups are used, and why they are hard to catch

Adulterants have changed over the years to beat the tests:

  • Cane and corn syrups come from plants that the standard C3/C4 isotope test can detect.
  • Rice and beet syrups come from plants that the C3/C4 test cannot easily separate from nectar sugars, so they can slip through.
  • Invert sugar and specially made syrups are processed to resemble honey's sugar profile.

In 2020, the Centre for Science and Environment reported that most of the 22 Indian honey samples it bought passed the standard Indian tests, but 77% failed when checked with NMR abroad (CSE). See which honey brands in India are NMR tested. Around the same time, FSSAI tightened its honey standards with extra markers aimed at rice syrup and other adulterants. Better tests help, but a label still cannot prove itself.

Can you check for added sugar at home?

Not reliably. The water, thumb, flame and paper tests mostly show thickness and water content, and syrup can be made thick enough to pass them. Crystallisation does not help either: syrup-cut honey can crystallise, and some genuine honey stays liquid. We explain each test in how to identify pure honey: home tests vs what actually works and why raw honey crystallises.

How to read a honey label in India

  1. Ingredients: should say only "honey". Words such as syrup, sugar, sweetener, "honey blend" or "flavoured" mean it is not pure honey.
  2. Source: a named flower or bee and a region (for example "Litchi blossom, Bihar") is a better sign than just "pure honey".
  3. FSSAI licence number: required to sell food. It shows the seller is registered, but it is not a purity test.
  4. Batch number and dates: you need the batch number to ask for a test report.
  5. Testing: a mention of NMR testing is useful only if the brand will share the report for your batch.

Questions to ask a brand

  • Can you send the NMR report for the batch number on my jar?
  • Which laboratory did the test, and when?
  • Which flower and region is this honey from?
  • Is it heated, and to what temperature?

A brand that sells honey with no added sugar should be able to answer all four. If the answers are vague, treat the label with caution.

How Shuddhta backs its "no added sugar" claim

"No added sugar" is the first of the five checks in the Shuddhta purity standard: no added sugar, no blending, raw (never heated above 40°C), a named source and region, and batch NMR testing at an independent laboratory. To see the report for your jar, send the batch number to help@shuddhta.com or WhatsApp +91 92207 67378.

Frequently asked questions

Does "no added sugar" honey have zero sugar?

No. Honey is naturally about 80% sugar. "No added sugar" only means no extra sugar or syrup was mixed in.

Is honey an added sugar?

When you stir honey into tea or food, health guidelines count it as a free (added) sugar, the same as table sugar. Inside the jar, its sugars are natural, which is what the label refers to.

Is "no added sugar" honey safe for diabetics?

It still raises blood sugar. People with diabetes should follow their doctor's advice on any sweetener, including honey.

Can I taste whether sugar syrup was added?

Not reliably. Syrups are chosen and processed to taste like honey. A laboratory test is needed.

Does an FSSAI licence prove there is no added sugar?

No. The licence is required to sell food. Testing for syrup is a separate step.

"No added sugar" ka matlab kya hai?

Matlab shahad mein bahar se cheeni ya syrup nahi milaya gaya. Iska matlab yeh nahi ki shahad mein sugar nahi hai, shahad khud zyaadatar natural sugar hi hai. Asli proof ke liye batch ki NMR report maangein.
